What in the World is Kevin Up to Now?

We are all aware of the amazing geothermal heating projects Kevin Allred has undertaken and completed since the Allreds moved to Tenakee. By heating the bathhouse, the store, the museum, the warehouse, and several residences with clean free geothermal energy , Kevin proved the experts wrong.

We are also all aware that for the past couple years Kevin has respectfully salvaged what was left of Rosie’s Blue Moon Café and built an imposing concrete foundation on the site, all by hand and with tremendous investment of time and labor.

It is perfectly reasonable to wonder…why?

Kevin and Carlene’s vision is a geothermal greenhouse and public space. The “New Moon Café” will honor Rosie and the historic original building, provide fresh produce year round, give local gardeners space to start plants and pursue new ideas, and be a warm and colorful refuge during dark winter days. Efficient LED lighting will make it possible to supplement winter light with little energy cost. There will be living quarters for a care- taker/manager. Carlene’s image shows the concept to scale and in living color.

Besides Kevin’s herculean efforts there have already been over 120 hours of other volunteer’s work contributed to this project. Kevin has salvaged quite a bit of material, and paid for other materials out of the Allred pocket. However some components, like the double-wall greenhouse panels, will be quite expensive. That’s where CCC comes in.

A community greenhouse, heated with carbon-free geothermal heat, is exactly in keeping with CCC’s goals of promoting a sustainable local economy. We want to help Kevin by raising money to help buy materials to finish the greenhouse.

Please consider contributing to this project. Tax-deductible CCC donations earmarked for the greenhouse project will be used entirely to help with material costs. With a strong record of local support we stand a better chance of securing additional grant funding.

I am excited and grateful to have a chance to support something entirely positive! I hope you will join in the fun.

Love, Molly
